01-01 The Old Grey Witch

Peter Gundry – The Coven – Dark Witch Fantasy Music

I am a Witch
I am who I am
My Path is Shadowed
It is neither black, nor white.
Yet it is both
Between the worlds I walk
I am of the Earth
Yet, I am of above, and below
I am a Witch

TheGreyWitches-1-1

Tara “Granny” Grey is the most powerful witch on the Pacific North Coast. Which is not really such an achievement, as there are only four of them in the whole area. She is also the most solitary, snobbish, grumpy, ill-tempered and uncaring you can surely find. To be brief, she has no desire whatsoever to socialize.

Not with anybody.

But it hasn’t always been that way…

Tara has a mean, scatterbrained and thoughtless younger sister, Melissa, or “Missy” as she prefers being called. She lives in Romania, on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. The small town of Vulturu nestled in the shadows of the Transylvanian Mountains suits her need for discretion, as no questions are ever asked about her activities as a ghost hunter and her curious aspiration to become a Zombie Master. The eccentric old lady is in constant search of true love, but obviously it is not in the graveyards she’ll find happiness.

Tara has a beautiful, headstrong grown-up daughter, Shasta. Mother and daughter never got along well, and as soon as decency allowed (or did something entirely else happen?), Tara got Shasta on a broom, literally kicking her out!

‘Good riddance, I’m better off without her anyway,’ she had grumbled for prying ears to hear and closed the door to her heart, I mean, home. If you ask the old lady about the whereabouts of her daughter, she’ll probably answer that last she heard of Shasta, she was living in Chugcreek, or Bridgeport… Or was it abroad? Paris maybe? Or London? Whatever…

The Cove, the Grey witches’ home since they moved to the new continent, had stood empty for decades when Tara moved in soon after her daughter left. It had been built in the late 18th century with privacy in mind, far away from civilization in the deep forests of the Cascades on the outskirts of the quaint little town of Bigwood Falls.

Even though the town is slowly expanding, the Cove remains isolated, and it takes quite a while to get there, following a hardly ever used road winding through the forbidding forest. But there are barely any visitors. Even the postman doesn’t swing by anymore. It is not as if anyone ever writes…

In winter, when the trees are devoid of leaves and before the heavy snow settles on the naked branches, you can see the witch-hat styled turret – if you know where to look, that is. But the rest of the year the Cove is effectively hidden by the lush vegetation, and most inhabitants of Bigwood Falls don’t even know it exists. Which suits Tara Grey perfectly. She couldn’t be happier, living on her own with her familiar, a black cat named Minuit*, as only company.

*French for Midnight

She spends most daylight hours, and probably even the dark hours of the night, making elixirs in the attic. Her potions are the best money can buy. It’s a pity the townsfolk are too afraid to come knocking on her door to acquire some.

As every respectable witch, she’s never to be seen without her hat and she has always got her Applewood wand hidden in the pleats of her long sweeping skirt. Being a grey witch, her magic is neither dark nor white but a balanced mixture in between. Her most powerful magic is unleashed in the protection spell she uses when the moon is full.

TheGreyWitches-1-8

She enjoys a good book and often reads herself to sleep late at night. If she forgets to turn off the light, there’s nobody there to argue. Not even Mrs. Brown.

Oh, have I forgotten to mention her? Mrs. Brown is the Cove’s housekeeper and she has been in the family for ages.

She cooks the most delicious meals and keeps the house clean and tidy. She’s very discreet, and hardly ever talks. That’s probably why I totally forgot about her, and also why the grumpy Grey witch can stand having her live in the Cove.

TheGreyWitches-1-6

Tara Grey is not one to socialize, so it is difficult to understand why Rayna Kaminski has remained one of her oldest friends. Maybe it is because they don’t see each other often enough to get bored.

When the snow melts in spring, once the mountain pass opens for traffic again, Rayna Kaminski and her boisterous gypsy family might arrive in town. Just might. It depends on their travel plans, and Bigwood Falls is not usually on their agenda. The Ivanov’s are attached to tradition, and they travel in an old-fashioned way, their brightly colored Vardos drawn by robust piebald Gypsy Vanners.

Tara’s old friend Rayna makes a living out of reading peoples fortune using Tarot cards but also an antique crystal ball. Sometimes Tara helps out with the readings. Bogey or real, it depends on the person who’s consulting. At least both old ladies get a good laugh out of it!

TheGreyWitches-1-7

So, Tara rarely leaves her house, minding her own solitary business. But if you’re awake before sunrise on Maundy Thursday, or if you decide to stay up when the moon is full, you just might see her fly past your window on her broom– but hush, don’t tell anyone.

Nobody would believe you anyway.

And so time goes by, each day the other alike, and that’s exactly the way Tara wants things to remain.

TheGreyWitches-1-9

Her small garden is filled with perfect healing herbs, edible mushrooms and beautiful flowers. Her bees deliver succulent honey and she loves collecting the ripen fruit in the orchard while her black cat Minuit catches small rodents and other living things necessary to bring power to her elixirs.

It is soon Samhain and the late October cold has transformed the landscape of Bigwood Falls into a lunar crispy white. The centenary cove is nestled in the large forest, its badly isolated roof covered in frost. But the morning sun will melt it away again, warming the few rooms used by the two old ladies.

The old Grey witch wakes up with a sense of foreboding this morning.

It feels as if I’ve forgotten something… something important… She slides her feet into her slippers.

‘Oh darn it! I put my left foot down first! Maybe I should just stay in bed today with a good book…’

But she does not lay back again. Instead, she gets ready as usual every morning, picking out a long grey skirt among several identical ones in the cupboard, and one of her starched white shirts. She struggles a little with her corset, thinking that she must ask Mrs. Brown to help her unlatch it a little in the back. The housekeeper will probably have something to add. She will most certainly have some stupid and unnecessary comment – like telling her to lay off the jam for breakfast. She grimaces at the thought of just buttered sandwiches. Maybe she’ll just unlatch it herself-

The sudden sound of the doorbell interrupts her thoughts.

TheGreyWitches-1-12

‘Can you take that, Mrs. Brown!?!’ she shouts, sliding her arms into the sleeves of her blouse.

The doorbell chimes again.

‘Mrs. Brown!!! Why doesn’t the darn woman answer the door? Tara eases into her shoes, struggling with the laces. Darn it! Must be her day off! But she never takes a day off so where is she?

Ding-dong… Ding-dong… Ding-dong-ding-dong-ding-dong…

The person ringing must have got their finger stuck on the buzzer, and the insisting chiming is unnerving the old witch. She fiddles with the buttons at her neck, tripping over her cat in search of her hat.

‘Now, where is it? Get out of my way, Minuit, or you’ll make me fall!’

She abandons her search and with murder on her mind she scoops the cat up on the way out of the bedroom.

‘I’m coming! Darn it!!! I’m coming!’

TheGreyWitches-1-13

She hurries downstairs, trying to arrange her hair with the cat in her arms. Irritably she pushes the door wide open.

‘What now!?! Stop leaning on the darn door-’ Her jaw drops when she sees who it is. ‘-bell…’

‘Hello, Mother.’

    1. I guess you ‘re talking about the sim’s vampire mark? Well, Shasta is not a vampire, she’s a witch like her mother and her daughter. I think the mark is quite beautiful and decided to use it in my story as the Grey witches’ mark, the one they are born with and that singles them out as of the Grey legacy! 🙂 There’s one vampire in the story, but he doesn’t make his entrance before chapter 51! 😉

      1. Yeah, I realized that next chapter, I just finished it, hadn’t had a chance to comment yet. I agree, I love the mark and love using it in my stories. I guess I got that she wasn’t a witch anymore from the description of Shasta in the About the Grey Witches tab and then seeing the mark and it wasn’t talked about in the chapter…lol, guess I made my own conclusions a little late. It is really neat to use the mark as a unique mark to the family though!

  1. The description was great and definitely sets up the story very well. I wonder though, why the daughter decided to come home? Especially after she was kicked out so terribly cold like.

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed the beginning of my story. I actually started writing short texts to accompany the screenshots I took while playing. My daughter usually sat beside me, listening and commenting, wanting me to “write a story”. I started this blog when the storytelling part of the old Sims forum became too restrained and I wanted room for bigger and better pics. I didn’t start using poses before the end of Part I, and the text wasn’t very elaborated either, so I’m actually rewriting the old chapters, adding more depth to the characters and having so much fun with poseplayer, (thanking you and all other wonderful creators again! 🙂 ) So you’ll find out more about the characters and the reasons of their acts in later chapters. Shasta can be utterly egotistical and Granny might not be as mean as her gruff exterior first let us think. Why she was “thrown” out, and much more, will become clear in the next chapters…

  2. I really like this old witch granny and I wanted to call one of my cat of the game Minuit too but I thought it was inappropriate lol. So the only black cat I got is Alceste a fairy one and her name is Onyx lol.
It’s good to be a grey witch, it means you have to master the good and the bad side of magic. Miss V is also a grey one. I only got a bad wizard.

    1. Granny is all about measure and good manners. Being a Grey witch suits her sense of “le juste mileu des choses”. There are some pretty bad witches later on, but as I’m trying to let the story be as “normal” as possible, they aren’t using their powers unnecessarily. I called the cat Minuit, as it was my daughter’s favorite cat name!

      1. Haha Je voulais l’appeler Minuit parce que paraît-il c’est l’heure des sorciers lol mais pour une fée ce nom n’était pas très bien associé.
. I am fluent in French so you can talk to me.
It’s quite interesting I got a characters who got the same attitude but he is rather different than Granny.

  3. Cool!

  4. Your story is so enthralling and combined with the music it makes for the perfect combination. Your pictures are also so big and beautiful. Granny seems like a really strong personality, I wonder how she reacts to her daughter’s come-back. I love all the magic, you’ve touched on the aspects of the game beautifully.

    1. Oh, my, thank you so much! I’m trying to keep the story as plausible as possible, keeping the supernatural toned down but keeping the magic. It isn’t easy, and I’m so happy you appreciate it!

      1. It was part of the fun, thinking up rules and a background to it all. If you scroll down the index, there’s a family tree and a first part of what happened to the first witch in Taïga’s lineage (Medieval)!

      2. Oh yes, I noticed you have so much in your menu, but decided to put away the extras for now. Plus I am a bit afraid of spoiling something to myself.

  5. Just read the first chapter and its wonderful! I bookmarked the world right now to download later when I’m able to buy the missing store content.

    1. Thank you! I’m so glad you like them – both the world and the story! 🙂 Twin Towns is huge, and as I own the store there are lots of store content…

  6. What a nice start. I agree with Jowita, your photos are so beautiful. As they are quite large, it’s nice seeing all of the little details. This is the first witch themed sim story I believe I’m encountering, I’ve seen others dabble in supernatural elements, but this is unique. I take it there are those who utilize white and dark magic, then? Since Granny mentions she’s a grey witch which is a mixture. Looking forward to seeing where this goes 🙂

    1. Yes, there are some other nuances for sure. I have tried to keep the supernaturals toned down, as I want the story to be realistic, too. So that’s why Granny just can’t do magic to get whatever needed or wanted. Anyhow, she just wants to be alone…

      1. Aww thanks. I’d appreciate it. My really long ongoing TS3 story is The Krazy Crazy Life of Kassiopeia Fullbright which has its own blog. I have loads of other stories on my LASL blog, most are ongoing.

  7. Well hello! I saw you liking my New Beginnings blog chapter by chapter. How exhausting. However, I’m glad you did because now I found another blog to read! Everyone is YouTube, twitch, streaming and I just don’t have time for that. Simlit has slowly faded away, but I’d much rather take my time and read a good story. So I’m looking forward to catching up on yours. I do hope you are still posting. 😁

    1. Hi there! Reading your story was no effort at all, only problem was I read on my phone so the liking went not that smoothly and I’m awful at commenting on anything else than a good, old-fashioned keyboard… To tell you that reading your story made me even consider firing up my computer with TS4, that I have installed but never really taken a good look at. Your pictures were really inspiring. My favorite still is the story of Ben, it’s sad to see the characters get old and finally disappear, but then you’re head first into a new chapter, with new “people” you really get attached to… You got me with the death of the faithful dog, it stirred up RL memories of my own cherished dobermann. So, regarding updates. Ahem. I’m writing when I can, but I have so much going on with my job as an ESL high school teacher, and we have just bought an old mansion/castle that we are making over. Or just trying to get heating, hot water and Internet functioning. And then hubbie was deployed. Again. He’s been away since november, and won’t be back until late this summer. I know this sounds like excuses, and they probably are, so bear with me 😉

      1. Awww. Thank you for the kind words. I have to say, I’ve only made it a few chapters in but I also find your screen shots gorgeous. I meant to make mention of the ones where you can see them watching form the windows. Making over the “castle” will be both fun and stressful! But the end result will be worth it! I’m so sorry your hubby is gone. *hugs*. Maybe by the time I make it through your story, you’ll have found the time to add a few more chapters! Thanks for reading too, it means a lot and there is no need to comment. I was just confused by all the likes all of a sudden. Lol.

      2. Oh, thanks, *hugs back*. But I have my daughter at home – well, she’s 20 so she’s more with her friends than at home, but it’s reassuring when she’s home. And I have a cat, Gimli, who looks like his Tolkien namesake and has a bit of his character, too 🙂 I hope you’ll have the time and will to read through it all, but it’s a lot of chapters, and a lot of text…

      3. I love to read so I’m sure between work, my story and the current TS3 apoc challenge I’m moderating – I’ll get there. ❤️
